That's the reality of running a local service business in 2026. Your reputation online determines whether the phone rings. And the most powerful piece of that reputation is your Google reviews.
Here's why it matters more than you think, and exactly what to do about it.
Why Google Reviews for Contractors Matter More Than You Think
When someone searches for a contractor, plumber, painter, or property manager — they're not browsing. They have a problem and they need it fixed. They're going to call one of the first three businesses they see on Google.
Those three businesses show up in what's called the local map pack — the listings with the star ratings and the map. The businesses that dominate that map pack almost always have more reviews, more recent reviews, and higher ratings than their competitors.
That's it. It's not magic. It's reviews.
What a good review actually does for your business
One specific, detailed review from a real customer does three things simultaneously:
It ranks you higher. Google uses review count and rating as a ranking signal. More reviews equals more visibility in local search.
It converts the visitor. Someone lands on your profile and sees "47 reviews, 4.8 stars, John fixed our burst pipe at 9pm on a Sunday" — they're calling. Someone who sees zero reviews is skipping to the next result.
It builds trust before you ever speak to them. A contractor with 40 reviews has already proven themselves to 40 people. The potential customer doesn't have to take a risk on an unknown.
The review that actually converts
Not all reviews are equal. A generic "Great service!" is fine. But a specific review is gold.
The reviews that actually convert new clients mention:
The specific service performed
A problem that was solved
The outcome or result
Something about the experience (fast, professional, communicative, fair price)
Example of a converting review: "Chastity organized our HOA's entire Buildium setup in two weeks. Our treasurer had been dreading it for months. Everything is clean, the bank account is connected, and we finally know where our money is going. Worth every penny."
That review answers every question a potential HOA board member would have before calling.
How to ask for reviews without feeling awkward
The easiest ask: right after the job is done and the client says something positive — and they will — say this:
"I'm really glad it went well. Would you mind leaving me a quick Google review? It takes about two minutes and it really helps my business. I can text you the link right now."
Then text them your Google Business Profile review link immediately while you're still in front of them.
That's it. No email campaign. No waiting. Ask in the moment, send the link immediately.
Where to send them
Your Google Business Profile review link is the most important. That's what shows up in search and in the map pack.
Once you have 10+ Google reviews, also ask clients to leave reviews on:
Yelp
Facebook
Angi (if you're listed there)
Google is the priority. Everything else is secondary.
What to do with reviews once you have them
Don't let them sit on Google and nowhere else. Screenshot your best reviews and:
Add them to your website (your About page and homepage are ideal spots)
Share them on Instagram, Threads, or Facebook as social proof posts
Include them in your email follow-ups to new leads
A review shared is a review doing double the work.
The one thing that kills your review momentum
Not responding to them.
When you respond to a Google review — even just "Thank you so much, it was a pleasure working with you!" — Google sees it as engagement. Other potential clients see it as proof that a real human runs this business and cares about their clients.
Respond to every review. Positive ones and negative ones. Especially negative ones — a professional, calm response to a complaint tells the next potential customer more about your character than ten five-star reviews.
If you don't have any reviews yet
Start with people who already know you. Past clients, neighbors, anyone you've done work for informally. Send them a direct message, remind them of what you did, and ask for a quick Google review.
Your first five reviews are the hardest. After that it becomes habit — for you and for your clients.
